Telling Our Story

Thursday was Kane’s cardiology appointment. As many of you know, I tend to get a little worked up before this appointment. But not this time! This time I have had so many “shiny” things happening, related to both education and photography that I didn’t even have a chance to freak out.

One of those shiny things has been brainstorming and planning a new personal photography project in conjunction with Kane. For awhile now, I have been struggling with the fact that I am telling Kane’s story. In the rational side of my brain I know I’m telling my parenting story, but when I talked about this at the Storytellers Photo Conference, I was presented with the idea of doing a diptych project involving my perspective and Kane’s perspective. Brilliant! How have I never thought of that?!

So for today’s appointment Kane chose to bring along our little Canon Elph point and shoot to take pictures of things that he found interesting. Keep your eyes out for our first collaborative post, titled Together, coming soon.

Talking about photos with Kane kept me busy during his echo and ECG. I also think going into the appointment knowing that we would be discussing surgery was helpful. I have to say I am constantly in awe of how our cardiologist approaches Kane and works with his quirky sense of humour.

So this image is a little misleading…it’s more about me projecting my emotions. Kane was not crying, he was just rubbing his eye while waiting for his echo. But our reality is that Kane’s subaortic stenosis is increasing. His cardiologist will be presenting his case to the cardiac surgeons again in mid June. At this point, she feels that Kane will likely be having surgery within the next 3-6 months. Kane is there during all of these conversations, though he is generally trying to figure out how all the different pieces of medical equipment work and therefore not really paying attention to what is being said. When I ask him if he has any questions or if he wants me to explain what is happening he says no. So for now Kane and I will have our cameras ready to help us talk about things he loves about the hospital and, as he gets a clearer understanding of what will be happening, what he is worried about.

Together.

Together we learn.

Together we heal.
